The manuscript "Synthetic views to traditional herbal medicine derived from text mining of biomedical bibliographies" presents the results of the text data mining of scientific databases to establish a relation between herbal medicines, cultures and diseases.
Unfortunately, the grammar, vocabulary and orthography of the manuscript is very poor, making it extremely difficult to follow the author's idea.
- The title is misleading and doesn't reflect the content of the document. "Synthetic"?? Maybe "In silico?"
- The introduction is not clear at all, and the aim of the research is not explicit
- Materials and methods are very confusing, it is not clear what the author actually did.
- Results: very brief, not descriptive. The author decided to separate in a different section "discussion"; however, it presents comparison with other papers in the results section
- Discussion: In the words of the same author: "the presented chart for a distribution of human diseases is of insufficient significance"... Then, Are these results worthy of publishing?
- Conclusions: absent.
In addition, to me it is not clear that the manuscript fits in the scope of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. Perhaps if the author can revise the manuscript with an English native speaker to clarify the way that is expressing its ideas it could be published elsewhere.

I believe that there is potentially useful information buried in this paper, but it is presented in such a way that it is very difficult to understand the overall aim and purpose of the work.
This may be partly a consequence of the author’s use of English, which needs to be improved rather dramatically. The manuscript is full of mistakes and inconsistencies, in the language, too numerous to mention individually, which serve to further confuse this already perplexed reviewer.
From what I can understand of the objectives (and again the methodology is very unclear), there are a large variety of relationships under scrutiny, with little guidance provided as to how these fit together, or for what purpose.
My feeling is that the subject matter is far too large to be included under the heading of a single paper, and even just one of these subjects (eg. taxonomic relationships with broad phytochemical classes (incidentally, it is terpenes (not terpens) and lactones (not lactons)) would be ample for a single publication. The phytochemical classes under consideration, as they stand, are also too poorly defined anyway for any satisfactory conclusions to be drawn (both terpenes and lactones, for example, are, numerically, huge groups of compounds with enormous structural and functional diversity).
While I applaud the intentions of the author, and, like others, wish to see more publications in this area of research (ie. bringing together phytochemical profiles of plants with both taxonomic and traditional medical data), this paper is simply too broad in scope and confusing in its presentation to be acceptable, quite apart from the difficulties with English alluded to above.
The author needs to rethink how best to present his findings, preferably in the form of a more focused series of articles presented in a much clearer fashion.
